How to Destroy Angels

I received a mysterious email pointing me to this. How To Destroy Angels appears to be the new project involving Mariqueen Reznor and Trent Reznor. A self-titled six song EP is to be released this summer. The tell tale sign besides the picture is the inclusion of the Korg MS-20 in the video which Mariqueen tweeted about here.

Nine Inch Nails at the Henry Fonda Theater

It was during Danny Lohner's guest appearance on the stage during "Heresy" that I mentioned via Twitter that this performance would go down in Nine Inch Nails history. My intentions were to review this show prior to the "final" show at the Wiltern to avoid entering debate amongst NIN fans which show was better. Now, I must wrestle with making the judgment call.

HEALTH





HEALTH's new album Get Color will make your ears bleed. Metallic shards of noise with kinetic waves of madness are funneled into an album that makes having a nervous breakdown sound like a good time. I finally purchased Get Color when I caught them at the Troubadour and can safely say that all the pieces are coming together for HEALTH.

While "Die Slow" has a catchy tribal thump, "We Are Water" is my favorite track from the album, as I could instantly recall the panic stricken guitars when they also played it at the Echoplex. "In Heat" is a torturous vortex of post industrial noise that ends as soon as it begins. The Nine Inch Nails fans were receptive to their noisy offerings but I must say HEALTH needs to be experienced at their own headlining show.

Is this really the last Nine Inch Nails live review that I will ever type? Probably. There are many reasons why this show will go down in NIN folklore, but I knew I was in for a treat when the infamous sampled electronic drums of "Head Like A Hole" blared over the speakers to start the show. Was this the Pretty Hate Machine show? I couldn't believe it. "Terrible Lie" quickly followed suit and the Henry Fonda was buzzing.

The buzz subsided slightly with "Sin" realizing that we would not hear Pretty Hate Machine in its entirety but the intensity of the band was unparalleled. The Henry Fonda also sounded pristine. "March Of The Pigs" and "Piggy" were furiously dispensed and I could tell the band was in top form. "Echoplex" ironically made the setlist which wasn't played the Echoplex.

The five song set of "Head Down", "1,000,000", "Letting You", "Burn" and "Gave Up" was the biggest punch in the face to the crowd that anyone could willingly request. It was simply amazing to hear some of Nine Inch Nails's hardest and heaviest songs consecutively. I was ecstatic. "Burn" still ranks as one of my top five favorite Nine Inch Nails songs.

The appearance of an acoustic piano on stage was noted early on by my friend up front which was unusual for a Nine Inch Nails show. Was Trent going to do some solo stuff? It turned out that Mike Garson joined the band for a handful of songs adding his avant-garde piano flourishes. "The Becoming" was the standout track of this mini-set as I forgot how bizarrely appropriate the cluttered piano notes make song more demented.

Gary Numan was a fixture at the last batch of Nine Inch Nails shows and contributed with a stellar version of "Cars" featuring Eric Avery of Jane's Addiction on additional bass support. The cover of "Anthrax" by Gang of Four was a pleasant surprise with members of HEALTH appearing on stage.

My mind was fully blown when Danny Lohner appeared on stage during "Heresy". I instantly was transported back to the early '90s watching Nine Inch Nails destroy the stage at the Warfield in San Francisco. I literally got the chills hearing "Get Down Make Love" as this is a not often played b-side from the "Sin" single. Dillinger Escape Plan brought the stage chaos and destruction by throwing around their gear, lights and bodies for "Mr. Self Destruct" and "Wish".

I was saddened that Trent had abandoned "Atmosphere" at the Echoplex show but was overjoyed when the old analog synth string intro. The Joy Division covers kept coming when they shredded through "Dead Souls". When Trent reached for a black Fender Stratocaster I knew "The Day The World Went Away" was next.

The only logical closer of the evening was "Hurt" which had a few people blurt out during the song but it couldn't put a damper on the amazing setlist and performance from one of my favorite bands. I hate to think this is the last ever Nine Inch Nails review but I can take comfort knowing that this was one of best out of the numerous Nine Inch Nails shows that I have witnessed.

Nine Inch Nails at the Echoplex

Do you remember when they allowed smoking inside shows? I would have a few pairs of designated concert clothes that were subjected to insane amounts of smoke and sweat. The heat levels at some of these shows were suffocating.

My brain was heat stroked enough during this show to trigger warm memories of going to Nine Inch Nails at the Warfield in San Francisco in 1994. The heat at the Echoplex for Nine Inch Nails eclipsed those smoking days to become the hottest show of the year.

HEALTH



HEALTH was sold out of their new album Get Color by the time I made it to merchandise booth. In a legion of extremely dedicated Nine Inch Nails fans, this speaks volumes. HEALTH is not for the weak .

HEALTH captured my attention when I saw them open for Autolux in April of 2007. They sonically sculpt tattered sheets of noise and screams into crushing tribal rhythms. The untrained listener might think its all noise but I appreciate the art in creating their alien sounds let alone weaving it into the form of a song.

My interest in purchasing their new album was twofold. First, I wanted to be able to identify some of the new songs that were played. Second, I was interested in the Golden ticket sweepstakes that potentially involved going to Magic Mountain for a day with the band. I have another chance as I will be seeing them again at the Henry Fonda and the Troubadour.

I felt extremely fortunate to attend this show. I was watching one of my favorite bands in a small venue in the midst of their final performances. What more could you really ask for... besides air conditioning?

Questions of Trent Reznor's health were immediately squashed as he came storming out of the gates with a vicious version of "Somewhat Damaged". I originally thought it would be so packed that people couldn't move, but I saw a mass of humanity swirl right in front of my eyes as I took shots safely behind the soundboard.

"March of The Pigs" still sounds just a fresh and as fierce compared to the first time I heard it in 1994. The crowd went absolutely bonkers as the strobe lights blinded me in combination with the mercury rising.

The setlist is deliberately drafted and Trent took it down a notch during "Something I Can Never Have". I have to give credit to the audience for remaining respectively silent during the quiet interludes.

"Terrible Lie", "Ruiner", "Head Down", "Burn" and "Gave Up" was the favorite snapshot of the set with Robin Finck churning out the metallic power chords. The number of people being pulled out from the pit during those songs was extremely high.

Nine Inch Nails took another short breather with "La Mer", "Non-Entity" and "Gone, Still" but would roar back with devastating versions of "The Big Come Down" and "The Way Out Is Through". "Wish" was Ilan Rubin's highlight of the night as he fiercely pounded away at his bass drum in the finale that would easily be on par with Josh Freese.

"Down In It" was a nice treat from the classic album Pretty Hate Machine but I was excited when Gary Numan took the stage for their muscular take on "Metal". Just when you thought they were going to do "Cars", they switched it up for "I Die, You Die". Gary Numan sounds flawless live and I will see him if he comes back for a tour of the States without a doubt.

The tease of the night came when Trent tried the opening chords of Joy Division's "Atmosphere" which would have been amazing to hear but was quickly scraped for "Dead Souls". One could hear a pin drop during "Hurt" which made the performance ten times more powerful. It was a bummer that someone bought 20 of the special "Echoplex" designated t-shirts but no one put on ebay the memory of attending this show. It was that special.

Nine Inch Nails at the Hollywood Palladium

Nine Inch Nails and Jane's Addiction at the Santa Barbara Bowl

The NINJA tour continues to destroy each city it visits. I was fortunate enough to catch their shows in Las Vegas and Irvine before settling in for my last show of the tour at the beautiful Santa Barbara Bowl.

The subtitle of the tour is "Wave Goodbye" as Trent Reznor claims that this will be the last widespread touring for Nine Inch Nails. A warning for those attending the shows is that Jane's Addiction closes out the show so make sure you get there early.

Street Sweeper Social Club






Decked out in matching military coats, Street Sweeper Social Club attacked the stage with their hard driving resistance rock. The engine driving this wrecking machine is the jaw dropping guitar gymnastics of Tom Morello. Tom has one of the more characteristic guitar tones in the business.

While I must admit Boots Riley (Vocals) does a great job of bouncing across the stage, it is hard not to stare at Tom Morello when he unplugs his guitar and pushes the input plug against his hand for a bizarre guitar solo.

Tom didn't stop there as he also used his teeth for another ripping sonic assault. I immediately purchased a Digitech Whammy pedal back in the day when I found out that Tom frequently used it on the debut Rage Against the Machine album.

Street Sweeper Social Club will release their self-titled debut album on June 16th. While it's difficult to recreate the intense dynamic of Rage Against the Machine, Street Sweeper Social Club is light years beyond Tom's endeavors in Audioslave.

"100 Little Curses" and "Fight!Smash!Win!" are dynamic call to arms songs that fuse the fiery raps of Boots with the guitar noise bombs of Tom. Show up early so you don't miss Street Sweeper Social Club.

Nine Inch Nails






I unfortunately missed Nine Inch Nails back in 1991 when they played Lollapalooza. At least, I can say I saw Nine Inch Nails play during sunlight as they started their set at 6:35.

Seeing a slew of dates during their technologically advaced "Lights In The Sky" tour, the only minor complaint was that the setlist was very similar night to night. The new stripped down line up and setup adds the new dynamic of surprise to each night.

I often asked the same question of "Why do you see bands multiple times?" This can easily be answered when I point out that Nine Inch Nails are playing a different set every night often unfurling gems from the past. The gems of the night were "I'm Afraid of Americans", "Burn", "Suck", "Home" and "Non-Entity".

One of the many highlights of the show was "Piggy" as Trent jeopardized his life by jumping down to the rail in front of the crowd and screaming the lyrics in front of the faithful fans. I can't specifically put my finger on why the show was amazing but there was a distinct energy from the band, the crowd and the venue. It was a magical combination that made the concert special.I also took one of my members of Team Chemist who had never seen Nine Inch Nails before and even she commented it was one of the top shows she has witnessed.

Trent hit up all the instruments at this particular show by playing guitar, synthesizers, tambourine and xylophone (during "The Good Soldier"). It is difficult to think that this will be the last Nine Inch Nails show I will attend but there are rumblings of a potential final show on September 2nd at the Hollywood Palladium. One can only hope this rumor is true.

Jane's Addiction






Jane's Addiction is back. I am sure you already know this from when I reviewed their show at the Echoplex. With a few shows under their belt, Jane's has really hit their stride, turning out compelling performances every night.

As much as I loved this particular set by Jane's at the Santa Barbara Bowl, it would have been to difficult to eclipse the energy that I witnessed the night before in Irvine. The difference would be this show was an A- compared to the A+ of Irvine. Perry Farrell wasn't nearly as talkative compared to the night before, but got in the spirit of the tour by donning black ninja garb. Instead of carrying swords or throwing stars, Perry was armed with a bottle of wine and a microphone as he pranced around the stage.

I am still in awe of the chemistry among Dave Navarro (Guitars), Stephen Perkins (Drums) and Eric Avery (Bass). It almost supports the belief in a metaphysical connection between people, the way they are interlocked on the various grooves of their songs.

Eric Avery kills it every night with his foot stomping, stomach rumbling bass lines that carry the songs. Stephen Perkins is hidden behind his massive double bass drum kit pounding away while Dave Navarro doesn't even break a sweat shredding on his white Ibanez guitar.

Their setlist doesn't change much, but it is filled with hits and deep cuts. Ending the evening with "Jane Says" brings it all together as Eric and Dave delicately strum the "G-A-G-A" simple melody knitted together by the steel drum playing by Stephen. There is a reason why no one has attempted to copy the sound of Jane's Addiction. It can't be done.

Lunch with Josh Freese at the Cheesecake Factory In Huntington Beach

(When is the last time you had lunch like this?)

An unknown number rang my cell phone on Sunday. I skeptically answered the phone and found myself speaking to Nicole who was coordinating lunches for Josh Freese. In case you haven't been following the saga, I previously posted Josh Freese's outlandish ideas to promote his new solo album.


Having been a fan of Josh Freese's drumming since his early days in the Vandals, I felt fortunate to be one of the lucky ones to buy lunch with Josh since all 25 packages sold out. Josh has worked with a slew of some of my favorite bands including Devo, A Perfect Circle and Nine Inch Nails. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to chat it up with Josh Freese over lunch at the Cheesecake Factory in Huntington Beach.


Meeting at 10:45 in front of Cheesecake Factory in Huntington Beach, I was greeted by the man himself, Josh and his cameraman. Josh handed me a goodie bag filled with signed drumsticks, a signed Remo Drumhead, his new cd/DVD, and a t-shirt. I had a feeling it would be filmed for his Youtube channel so I wore my Hum t-shirt and tried to not act like a complete dork.


Josh was very down to earth and just as zany and energetic as his drum style. It seemed to hit Josh that he was really going through with his masterplan when we sat down to eat. He relayed the craziness of trying to coordinate with people flying across the country to play miniature golf with Maynard from Tool, and Mark from Devo.


We were quickly questioned by the staff at the Cheesecake Factory as to why we were filming. Josh politely explained what he was doing and the waitress didn't seem to grasp the fact that Josh will be back potentially twenty times. It is a good thing that the Cheesecake Factory menu is quite extensive.

I did get a chance to relay my extensive live show history with Josh. I even mentioned the time I saw Josh drum for Maynard at the Whiskey for a Circle Jerks benefit. I didn't get tickets for the Viper Room show that happened later that day which was the live debut of A Perfect Circle. Josh quickly added he remembered playing to a few hundred people with A Perfect Circle as the first band on the main stage for Coachella in 1999.


I ordered a chicken and shrimp jambalaya pasta while Josh ordered a turkey sandwich and soup. What has gotten lost in the midst of all the craziness, is that Josh is promoting his new solo album which serves as a homage to the Replacements, Fear, and the quirk pop of Devo.

One of the funnier moments of the lunch was when Danny Lohner of Nine Inch Nails called Josh. I sarcastically asked Josh to quiz Danny on the status of the Renholder album which is Danny's side project. I did get some funny tour stories that I probably shouldn't recant here but overall the lunch went by in seconds.

I did get a chance to ask Josh about his contribution to Juliana Hatfield's album Only Everything to which Josh commented it stood out in his memory of being a fun album to work on. Unfortunately, I ran out of time to quiz him about Buckethead and the Guns N'Roses days.

We ended the lunch by taking a few photos in front of the Cheesecake Factory parking signs which may end up on his site. While you can put a price tag ($250) on the package, the whole experience was pretty classic and worth every penny. This very well will be the most expensive post here on Amateur Chemist but one that definitely will not be forgotten.

Nine Inch Nails at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas

It all stated with a private rehearsal show at the Forum. The Nine Inch Nails "Lights In the Sky" tour was a visual and aural assault that made it the best tour of 2008. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, as the tour closed out at the Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.

I still haven't gone through my gigabytes of photos from the open camera policy show in Sacramento and wanted to enjoy the show more by taking a few select shots. I did have a pit ticket (Thanks Mel/Jessie!) and my old trusty point and shoot camera to take a few shots of the evening but mainly focused on enjoying what I thought would be the last Nine Inch Nails show for sometime.

As I mentioned in the Sacramento review, I knew it would be Josh Freese's (Drums) last show but was surprised to hear that Alessandro Cortini (Keyboards/Guitars) would also be departing. Alessandro will be focusing on ModwheelMood (who were outstanding when they opened for Ladytron at the Henry Fonda) and his Buchla ambient project Blindoldfreak.

A whiplash of bass triggered one of my favorite songs "The Great Destroyer" with its incorporation of the Windows Blue Screen of Death that flashes on screen for a few seconds amongst all the other distorted imagery. One of the other highlights of the show include Josh's drumming at the end of "Ghosts Piggy" which served as an abbreviated drum solo to which he received a rapturous applause.

Some of the things I observed being close to the stage was Trent Reznor (Vocals/Guitars) used a piano sustain pedal for his Gibson Hollowbody guitar for the ending of "Echoplex". Trent also would also toggle his pickup switch on "Terrible Lie" for his parts to switch the pickups on and off. The intriguing news coming from the show was Trent's speech that he will be back in 2009 with the band as a four piece playing some dates in the United States. I speculate Trent may perform some of his earlier albums in their entirety before closing the book on Nine Inch Nails. Only time will tell.
